Maya Modelling Challenge - Part 2

And so it continues; my work for the maya modeling challenge received a while ago;

I decided to refine some of my geometry by using the mirror cut tool to cut the skirting board I made last time to achieve a more even cut, it took a while though to realize I needed to set the option to "discrete rotate" so that it would angle round without leaving gaps.

Additionally i also started blocking out the main structure of the model using simple geometry just so i could better visualise the rest of the elements on the model.

Added the roof of part of the building i was modelling, tapering the vertices at the top using scaling and then using the vertices loop tool to create the more accurate to image shape. Also angled these triangles inwards to capture the slant on all sides of the image. Also got a chance to do more mirror cuts by cutting that shape and creating the back laying building.

More mirror cuts, wow this tool is really handy for making use of geometry i've already made, i added another block to show the upstairs building and added a couple of columns to better flesh out the distances as shown in our target image.

making some progress now, the skirting board now runs around all sides of the building, as well as more pillars duplicated and positioned to be equally spaced around the model where they appear in our reference image. (i also added a quick plane to be the ground so to better judge the distances for which some more structures will be on).

I've now started work on the central building in the image, and for that i started to build the base by using the extrude tool a lot to get the ridges and edges for this base, man what  a pain to do.
on the other hand this can be done using just a basic square so it doesn't require anything fancy.

Further tweaking and some advancement, i added some of the detail to the central block using smaller cube objects to create the lattice work, also implemented my door indent on the side face by creating edge loops and extruding the faces to leave behind the indent of a door. I should also be able to create the fancy trimmings on the roof by just extruding faces where they are then mapping on a texture for them using png to give a transparency where the texture isn't.

All in all a good lesson, lots of progress and tweaking to get a better looking model, as well as clearing up some problems or inefficient decisions i made last time. only downside is that it looks like it needs more investment to finish the model and then texture it to properly finish.
