Pixel Art Session - Old never looked so good

Today's morning session (on a Monday i might add, which is a little weird considering im used to a Tuesday sessions) is for pixel art, which was abundant due to the technological limits that earlier systems and computers placed on art implementation in games. The great part is this type of art still advanced and can look great even in the current age , it just takes good use of the skill to make it look great.

I accidentally ended up going through like half the lesson before realising i should be blogging so the first image is gonna show the first few things we did alongside what the current task is.

The first thing we made is a line of pixels, then multiplied what we made and adjusted them to make a box, then duplicated this and drew connecting lines to make a cube, its pretty interesting to see how working from an isometric or orthographic view means you construct objects to convey their 3D nature.

Using that box created from pixels we could also draw a Ellipse inside of it (which is hard to make look like a proper circle using pixels) and then similarly to how we duplicated and constructed the box, we made a cylinder.

The final challenge was to try and create our own pixel based version of the fire hydrant image, which gives us the challenge of making use of the elliptical marquee tool, judgement of spacing with pixels and use of a colour limit, all in all a pretty fun challenge and i even managed to do pretty well with this, I think because the ways you can deviate with pixel art are a little more exact than working with paint.

B-B-B-Bonus... we finished the lesson off with learning the start of how to animate pixel sprites using Photoshop, by adding the timeline through window we can then use multiple images to make an animation (though we have to use the bottom right menu and set make frames from layers) which will give us a timeline of a walk animation (that was provided for us) pretty neat eh? never knew how to animate with Photoshop and it lends itself quite well to on the fly editing and timing adjustments.
