Double Week SketchBook Assignment - Muscles

Promise to make more posts = no new posts for two weeks, well I'm already off to a shaky start. For this weeks work (two weeks worth) As though carrying on from the skeleton assignment, we've decided to hit the gym and get some muscles. So we had to cover a muscle map of a front and rear view, and give some highlights of some of the key muscles.

Much like with the skeleton assignment I definitely got a lot out of this work, it reinforced things i knew or rather had put into practice within my art work and gave me a clearer thought on how to structure a body effectively.

The couple of sketches i did first were;

Sadly this sort of overlaps with the full body view drawing (i skim read my assignment and only realised this afterwards) but i still think it has relevance as a close up drawing looking at the pectoral, abdominal and general chest muscles on a male adult. the interesting part is how so many components exist around the armpit and breast area where you have loads of smaller muscles intersecting in that zone.

More on point i deduced (after actually thoroughly reading my brief) that i wanted to give a little coverage to a female muscle map as it was interesting to note the differences both small and large in how muscles are laid out on the body, it also helps tell why you get such differences in shape between men and women.

Finally the key pieces, the full body muscle map; here you can see i had trouble with fitting the front view on the page again (i made use of world lines but slowly adjusting widths eventually extended it out of the page) but i improved this aspect in the second image by making sure to more strongly rough out the bulk of the figure with ample room if i need to adjust lengths of limbs.

I was definitely happy with the amount of detail i was able to retain in the views, though to offset this the sketches were extremely time consuming as i attempted to adjust the line work to try and match the source images.

(as a personal little goal if i can revisit this and add to it, i would like to add some colour to give some greater distinction between zones as well as add some additional sketches (maybe some action poses to show the muscles at work))
