New year - Visual arts and Animartion - Modelling the USS Enterprise

Time for some new year's modelling and apparently this means setting course for the Starship Enterprise;

firstly we were given the reference image for the various views of what we are up to model, so the first step is setting up a new project in maya, setting up a plane and assigning its material first to lambert, and then to the image we were give. Planar mapping helps to get the image displayed correctly on the plane.

Then we duplicated it for for how many views were were using (3), following this we duplicate the plane and cut faces into those planes to grab the specific viewpoint that we want.
To place it in the correct place we also had to set the translate coordinates to 0 and then move the face of the plane to the correct position. the first point sets the pivot, the second sets the image.

The end result of placing these about looks a little like this.

by creating a primitive cube and then using the 3 key to show the smoothing of the model we can see how the cube can be adjusted using its vertices to produce a more smooth and realistic looking model.
my end result from doing a component of the model ended up looking like this.

The model for aspects like the radar is a little confusing, robin showed me that by using the bezier tool and drawing half of the object, then centering the pivot using insert and moving it i can then use the revolve command it completes the shape (it rotates it round the pivot)
(this note is largely a reminder so i can look back if i get stuck)

This is the end result of my session, some bits are done of the model but i think they could be alot better done =/

Some of this aspect of modelling is still a little confusing and i need to practice else im going to be confused, its hard to know when i should be editing vertices and smoothing versus using standard extrusions. The best course for this is to practice at home to get a hang of these tools.

This will also likely have a part 2 to it (mostly because this is a two week homework)
