Paintover, Paintover red rover

Today's lesson covers the technique mixing 3D models and Photoshop painting; by using a 3D model as a base (greyscale and lighting included), we can paint over it to produce quick and high quality paintings.

This is something i had sort of had thoughts about in my own head where i wanted to draw something and i knew i'd more likely be able to make the general shape in Maya due to its tool set, so i can definitely see where this comes in handy due to how it compensates with how time consuming certain shapes are to draw correctly or competently.

the first task we had to handle then was immediately to apply a texture to a render in Photoshop;

The tricky part here is making use of the transformation tools like; warp, skew rotate and so forth to make the textures look like they are on the renders contours.

pretty nice looking eh? even at my level you can make stuff look nice by just tinkering around with it for a while. the sides i could probably work on again since they don't flow well with the other segments of the barrel.

The final piece we did was using a supplied vampire, the task being to find some textures and apply them to a model, this being a tad more complicated than the straightforward edges of the barrel as the shape is organic and has a lot more variation is form.

I found a particularly good flesh-like texture (which i was then later told looked like bacon so that's annoying to have in mind) and found a lot of success in dragging it over the model and seeing where bits looked good to apply. this looked really good as it helped find some convenient overlap for the textures. the face in particular was a good start because it sort of reminded me of the uruk-hai from lord of the rings movies with their face paint,

Next i applied a layer of colour to the model which sits over the top and helps make the model look less "fake" by bringing out other colours in the model and making it less look like i just slapped the textures on (much appreciated steve for showing me this), i opted to go for vein like purples and blues to add to the "flesh" like theme i had going

it's not quite done but i'm really happy for the unsettling vibe i got going , i think i could have done maybe a more complex job layering textures and i need to add more colour to reduce the plastic like look that can occur, but the flow of the model is on point for the musculature and the texture definitely accentuates his monster like attributes. Definitely a style of working i like doing.
