Proportions - Elves and Dwarfs make for a nice change of pace

Last weeks lesson had us doing work on proportions when drawing characters and how variation in that proportion helps show things like babies from adults as well as when there intends to be a variety of human like race. To further this point we had to then draw our own elf and dwarf, following through with making there proportions relatively in line with their stereotype; elves are tall and willowy, dwarves being stout and hefty. As such we were shown roughly how many heads their height would be and where key points in their anatomy would be. Elves would be around 8-9 heads tall, Dwarves 4-5 heads. The dwarf i had a lot of fun with as it gave me a chance to try really emphasising the hard edges of the body to give it a sturdy look despite the smaller proportions. The elf on the other hand was more challenging as i usually only go up to 6 - 7 heads in my other work so it was harder to balance out features and body parts over that longer distance. Paintover, Paintover red rover

Today's lesson covers the technique mixing 3D models and Photoshop painting; by using a 3D model as a base (greyscale and lighting included), we can paint over it to produce quick and high quality paintings. This is something i had sort of had thoughts about in my own head where i wanted to draw something and i knew i'd more likely be able to make the general shape in Maya due to its tool set, so i can definitely see where this comes in handy due to how it compensates with how time consuming certain shapes are to draw correctly or competently. the first task we had to handle then was immediately to apply a texture to a render in Photoshop; The tricky part here is making use of the transformation tools like; warp, skew rotate and so forth to make the textures look like they are on the renders contours. pretty nice looking eh? even at my level you can make stuff look nice by just tinkering around with it for a while. the sides i could probably work on again sin...

February Life Drawing Roundup (Okay i can probably remember the order these things go) (part 2)

Ughh, because of how these photo's are taken the pictures are all in reverse order so i have to reorganise them everytime, what a pain. Anyway the second week of February's life drawings are here....i think. It's definitely from february though. With that said, the warm up sketches, man was i not on point that day, some really coarse looking sketches, with not alot of detail on them. I could have definitely shaded them better or at least covered more of the body. and i was obviously having trouble getting the poses out from all those extra lines. Some better sketches here we had to draw piece focusing on the hands. So, making use of the compressed charcoal and following the guidelines of inverting the sketch so that i make the detail from what i dont make marks on, this was quite an interesting experience as usual, the outspread hand while a simple pose was tough to sketch the negative space for to make the fingers look right as i had to capture the nuances...
